This is not sentimentalism or “fluff”, this is a biological imperative for our mammalian brain validated by all the scientific research on attachment.

As a leader, people look up to you for predictability, consistency, vision, clarity and reassurance. They also want to feel valued, understood, trusted, treated fairly, and genuinely cared for by you.

Without this essential emotional nourishment, the brain’s threat detection system gets activated and gears us up for metabolically draining coping strategies.

This results in disengagement -people are “switched off” and seem uninterested- or downright hostile behaviors with people fighting, criticizing each others, and not taking responsibility for their actions. Leadership coaching with Lighthouse Coaching involves the following:

  • It starts with you: identifying your own triggers and understanding situations and people that tend to pull into reactivity

  • Exploring your own internal and external processes as a leader: what do you do when you feel threatened as a leader? Do you become avoidant and hide, or do you become more controlling and threaten to deliver?

  • Helping you get in touch with your own vulnerability: being willing to show people that you don’t have all the answers, that you are disappointed with them for a poor outcome or afraid with them that you might not deliver on a project shows care and concern for the team. It indicates that you are in it with them and that you are human and approachable.

  • Communicating authentically and with care: putting the WE at the US at the center of conversations and interactions. Sharing your own load also invites them to feel allowed to do the same. You don’t have to do it all alone.
